Connecting with Students in Bogotá

Aug. 2024

At their second engagement of the day, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined Vice President Márquez for a visit to El Colegio de Cultura Popular, a school that serves approximately 400 students aged 12 to 18. Since 2002, the school has focused on enhancing knowledge areas, strengthening socio-emotional skills, fostering individual talents, and encouraging students to become autonomous problem-solvers and team players committed to social transformation.

During their visit, the Duke and Duchess participated in an Insight Session hosted by The Archewell Foundation, delving into discussions about the digital world and its impact on society.

The students expressed profound gratitude for their digital literacy course, which transformed their understanding of technology use, helping them gain control over their tech habits and reduce anxiety, while also providing critical insights into social media algorithms and ethical considerations. They highlighted the positive aspects of technology, such as access to information and staying connected with distant family, but also voiced concerns about the negative impacts of tech on education, emotional well-being, and information integrity, emphasizing the need for media literacy and critical thinking skills.

After, the couple enjoyed a lively recess where they met more students. The visit underscored the importance of nurturing young minds in a supportive environment and providing opportunities for both personal and academic growth.

Prince Harry and Meghan were deeply moved by the students’ passion and creativity and expressed their admiration for the school’s commitment to education and community enrichment.
